#23: Reproductive Rights Are Disability Rights

accessiblesocial.substack.com

I don’t really have words to express the range of emotions I’m feeling right now over the Roe v. Wade news: rage, despair, grief, fear, abject sadness. I’m going to let people who are far more eloquent than me do the talking today.

Please read the joint statement released by the American Association of People with Disabilities, Autistic Self Advocacy Network, Autistic Women and Nonbinary Network, Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law, Be A Hero Center for American Progress, Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund, Little Lobbyists, and Women Enabled International.

Stay well, friends.

Disabled people have the right to self-determination and bodily autonomy. We have the right to make our own decisions. Our human rights include reproductive rights. Abortion rights are disability rights #DisabledAndProChoice #RoeVsWade #Dobbs

Disabled pregnant people—esp queer & trans, poor, BIPOC, sick disabled people—WILL die because roe was overturned. The stakes aren’t just politics or economics or quality of life. Some disabled pregnant people just learned that they are going to die. They fucking MATTER.

Pregnancy is deadly for many disabled people, who are more likely to have complications and to be poor or can’t travel to another state for healthcare. Abortion is a disability rights issue. Abortion is disability health care. #RoeVsWade #dosomething

Today We are thinking of the disabled folks that this ruling will impact. It’s already difficult for us to receive adequate care and we can’t imagine what this ruling will do to us.

All disabled people deserve the autonomy and freedom to make the decisions best for ourselves and our lives: about our health care, our families, and how we want to live. Today's Supreme Court decision will rob so many of self-determination. That is devastating.

Reminders: — Safe abortions will still be sought and had by conservative white women and privately encouraged by conservative white men — Unsafe abortions will still be sought by desperate marginalized people with horrific consequences, leading to needless death and suffering

Where to Donate

Do not donate directly to politicians. They don’t need your money as much as actual clinics and abortion access funds do. Donate to the National Network of Abortion Funds, Keep Our Clinics, the National Black Women’s Reproductive Justice Agenda, the National Abortion Federation, NARAL Pro-Choice America, the Midwest Access Coalition, or any of the funds below. States in bold are states where it’s almost certain that lawmakers will prohibit abortion. Not all 50 states are listed because it was completely dependent on what information I could find online.

You should also check out organizations like If/When/How and National Advocates for Pregnant Women. They’re fighting for people who have been criminalized over their reproductive decisions. RAINN is also a great organization to donate to because we should always be supporting survivors of rape, abuse, and incest.
